Objectives
Characterize in depth bio-geophysical exposures (pollution, green and blue space and biodiversity) in Porto Metropolitan Area in the last decade and investigate the presence of socio-spatial inequalities.
Investigate the impact of the exposure to air pollution, green and blue spaces and biodiversity on the development of allergic diseases and asthma among children from the Geração XXI, taking into account the residential and school environment.
Study the impact of the above-mentioned exposures since conception until 10 years of age, identifying critical and sensitive periods of exposure.
Generate urban planning recommendations and information about the biological and epigenetic mechanisms beyond the development of these diseases.
Tasks
This project will have a duration of 3 year and includes the following main activities:
Collection and modeling of data about air pollution across Porto Metropolitan Area.
Characterize green and blue spaces, as well as biodiversity, across Porto Metropolitan Area.
Participant georeferencing since birth until 10 years of age and assessment of the above-mentioned environmental exposures.
Clinical, social and demographic characterization of the participants and measurement of allergen sensitization biomarkers and lung function.
Construction of statistical models to estimate the associations between the exposure to air pollution, green and blue spaces and biodiversity and the development of allergic diseases and asthma.
